I recently just finished watching 13 Reasons Why on Netflix. If you haven’t heard of it its a series about a teenager who died by suicide and she left tapes of the 13 reasons why she died. It’s seriously good! I was addicted and binge watched it in a few days. It had an extremely good message- be careful of what you say to others. After finishing watching it I reflected on being 15 and just remembering how hard it was.
So, I thought I would share this article on the 15 things I wish I was told at 15. I’m 20 now so I feel I have gained a huuuuge amount of knowledge about life in the past 5 years but its not that long ago for me not to understand.
I originally wrote this article for an American teenage website so I’m sorry for some of the cringey teen American slang!
1. School doesn’t last forever.
School isn’t the be all and end all, but it can be a lot of fun. Make the most of your time in school because it doesn’t last for long and if school isn’t treating you well don’t worry you’ll be out of there in a flash.
2. Don’t care so much about what other people think of you.
Seriously stop spending endless nights worrying about what your so called ‘friends’ think about you or what clothes will make you look the coolest. Just go with the flow and do whatever YOU want, don’t change for anyone. It can be hard to stick out in high school but don’t change yourself because in the long run you will be the ‘cool’ one who didn’t give AF.
3. Stop giving your mom such a hard time.
She always has your best interest at heart so please give her a break. Also, stop hiding things from her she’s there to help you! Whether it’s about a boy problem or someone is bothering you at school mom always knows best.
4. Caking yourself in makeup is not going to make you look any prettier.
In fact it will make you look worse. Ohh if I could tell my fifteen year old self to ease off the foundation I would have had much better skin, and I wouldn’t have looked like a moron. Seriously you look WAY better with less make up plus remember although it hides spots it also increases them too.
6. Wear what you want not what others want you to wear.
Half the time I wore things because they were ‘in’. How stupid is that? Wear whatever YOU want to. Also your metabolism won’t be that fast forever so it may be the only time certain clothes will look that good on you. Get your pizza cravings out of the way now too because you can take it. Seriously I swear on your 18th birthday it’s like “happy birthday gal here’s 15 pounds!”
7. Your teachers are not there to make your life hell.
They actually want to help you, it is their job! Stop fighting with your teachers because they have your best interest at heart. You will realise this when you’re older and thank them because you don’t realise how much of an influence they have on you.
8. It’s ok to feel sad sometimes.
Everyone feels down sometimes and when hormones are thrown into the picture you can feel like your going through hell. Talk to someone, even your Bestie because chances are they are going through the exact same thing.
9. The Bullies are the ones with the biggest insecurities.
Remember that they have their own problems and insecurities and that’s why they bully you, you are a threat. Never stoop down to their level and you will always come out on top.
10. Don’t drink underage.
Just don’t do this. You have plenty of time when you are an adult and it’s seriously not worth it. You have no idea what your limit is and can land yourself in a lot of trouble.
11. Get involved in more after school activities.
Why would you give up all your hobbies in high school? Sign up for the basketball team or photography club because sport is a great form of exercise (which your not getting enough of) and clubs are a great way to meet new and interesting people.
12. The ‘cool kids’ aren’t so cool when school ends.
You spend your entire time at school trying to fit in and be one of these only to realise when you finish school that your ‘status’ in high school means absolutely nothing. Make friends with people you actually like not the ‘cool’ kids.
13. Stop thinking so much about every little thing.
You need to stop and relax. Don’t get so upset when two of your friends went to the mall without you. They might have honestly forgot to invite you. And if it really bothers you don’t jump to conclusions- ask them and let them know it bothered you. How can problems be solved if they’re not confronted?
14. That boy your texting is probably texting a million other girls too.
Be careful and try not to be so naive. Your first boyfriend unfortunately does not turn out to be Prince Charming..
15. Believe in yourself.
This is the thing that you will still find the hardest when you are older, but with every new year you come another step closer. Believe that you can achieve great things, craic a smile and be the best you you can be.
